Jonah Nicholas, 21 Months, and coming soon...

It's been another joy-filled month with out little Jonah!  There's just no way to express how much we love spending time with our little guy.  He has started to show his nurturing side this month, putting his animals to bed and feeding them, which is good timing since he will become a big brother in July!!  We will know by the end of this month if he is expecting a little brother or sister.

Growth: Again, no official measurements until he turns 2, but our little guy is growing!

Sleep:  His habits and sleep patterns are all status quo.  Thank goodness.

Eating:  He has phased out some foods, like the banana he couldn't start his day without, and now loves eating a pouch of fruit and vegetable mixed baby food he calls "chereal" and cheerios with milk in the morning.  He does best with an open cup, but sometimes uses a straw. You'd think the straw would make matters easier, but he likes to tip the cup up even with the straw there, so you get the picture.  He begs for chicken (fake chicken), "fufu" (tofu), and has moved away from strawberries and prefers blueberries and cherries, which he asks for by name.  Jonah is still on the adventurous side for toddlers, but he has become more conditional. He will like one food one day and won't take a bite the next.  When he's done, he HAS to have it off his tray, stating adamantly "Away!  All done!" Some foods are rejected once cut, and quite desirable when whole.  Mac and cheese at home goes untouched and gets shouts for "more!" at Mimi and Poppy's.  We try to be understanding, encourage him to be flexible, and introduce as many new things to him as we can so he doesn't become limited to what many call "kid food" and miss out on other healthy and tasty goods.

Personality: Jonah is a playful pup who continues to love many of the same things.  It is so fun to begin to see him playing imaginatively with his stuffed animals- brushing Scout's hair, riding bear, and feeding snowman. He has become more aware of feelings, giving you a pat on the back and "I sorry" if he hurts or upsets you.  He plays with Alton more, asking permission to give "Alton treat" and "Alton toy."  Olive watches from a safe distance.  Our Jonah loves books, however when we go to the library downtown on Thursday (which he calls the "playbary") he plays with all the toys, and participates in all the songs and interactive parts of story time, but the second there is a book present, he wiggles and reaches towards the door, whining "down, play!" Go figure.  He looks forward to music class and loves "The more we get together," "Pony boy," and getting a stamp on his hands and tummy at the end of class, called "lalas."  He does all of the things we listed last month still, and has added a new silly Jonah trick of running around (always to the left) calling out circle- "shuckle!" He loves talking about himself, as in "silly Jonah" or "yay Jonah!"

Milestones: Jonah's vocabulary has grown, and he will make an attempt to say anything you ask him to.  He can do up to a 4-syllable word and can string together 3-4 words into a thought.  His pronunciation of words he has been saying has gotten much better. Don't ask us why water is still "aba." Also, it's cute how he says Grandma "Geema" and Lauren "Lauwen" with an audible "u."  We are still working on using the potty, which hasn't progressed much; mostly he sits on it twice a day and sings.
"Bunny lap ballball!"

Events: Lindsay went to San Diego for a PT conference for 4 nights, leaving the boys home alone. Jonah missed his mommy but overall did very well. We had a few friends over throughout the month, including the Evanchan, Cohen, Wilson, Fischer, and Bierlein families, and enjoyed a night at the Ecker home.  We also had a playdate at the play cafe Piccadilly with Florentina and Roger.  Jonah loves talking about his friends and always wakes up the next morning uttering their names as he awakens.  He seems most comfortable in smaller groups, and tends towards parallel play, but likes having other friends there to share toys with.

Jonah did have one exciting "first" this month -- his first haircut! We went up to our friend Courtney's house where she has a salon set up in the basement. Jonah was a little small for the gown. He started saying, "all done!" as soon as he sat in the chair, but with the help of some toy trains and Mommy's iPhone he sat through the whole thing.

We hosted an event through our synagogue called PJ Havdalah, where the rabbi, youth director, and any family in the community with young children is invited to come, in pajamas, participate in a Havdalah service, eat a snack, and sing and dance along with Marc Rossio.  Jonah "knows" him from school, since he leads the Shabbat assembly each Friday where he sings and plays all the kids' favorite Shabbat tunes on his guitar.  There were probably 40 people here and it got pretty wild and crazy. Let's put it this way: they tested the structural integrity of the loft.

The baby! : Lindsay and baby had a 4-month checkup and the baby is growing and the heartbeat is strong.  Last month they got some great images of baby Goodman, who kept kicking, dancing around, and thumb-sucking.  We are expecting his or her arrival July 19th.  Lindsay was feeling nausea and food aversion for about a month and a half, but has turned a corner and feels like a bottomless pit.  At this point, everyone's doing great, and although we are nervous about how this will change things (and deprive us of our sleep), we are overwhelmingly excited.  We can't wait until February 26th when we have the anatomy scan and find out the gender! We have told Jonah, but we aren't sure that he really understands when we are telling him.  He loves playing with babies though, and we think he'll be happy to meet BG!
