Jonah Nicholas, 25 Months

Our boy just keeps growing, along with our love.  It's just amazing how many times a day we look at him or think of him and can't help but smile over how cute, funny, and beautiful he is. As Jonah will tell you, if you prompt him: You are soooo... "prechis."  And indeed he is the most precious little boy ever!

Growth: With how much our little guy has been eating, there's now doubt he's growing!  Too bad one of his few fears is the scale or we'd be more specific.

Sleep: Still doing great!  He takes a solid 2-3 hour nap and sleeps about 11 hours at night.  We hope that will continue next month when he starts sleeping in a toddler bed!  He also loves to play pretend nap time with Mommy and Daddy.  He will guide us through what props he wants here and there until we are snuggled up on the floor to his exacting standards. Most recently it was "I'm takin' a nap on tuttle with Daddy, ducky, doggie. I use a blue geen blankey. Daddy wrap you. We snuggle in togegeh."  On the trip to and from Detroit last weekend he talked a good talk "Jonah take a nap in Daddy car!" but then had trouble falling asleep and only napped an hour each way.  Oh how things have changed since he was a baby and 30 seconds of car motion would knock him right out.

Eating:  Jonah has been a real big fan of veggies lately.  He is really excited about sweet corn on the cob, squirty tomatoes (thanks Daniel Tiger), carrots, celery, mushrooms, and sugar snap peas.  Last night be actually took a bite of brownie, set it down, and asked for carrots.  Fine.  He is still really into his dried fruits "want apipots and raisins" and all kinds of fruits, like this month lots of cherries and watermelon.  Jonah's interest and involvement in the kitchen (or as he says, "chicken") has increased this month. He has taken quite the interest in pulling up the stool Poppy made him and helping to cook and bake. He is very proud to tell you what he did to help make dinner!  He is fascinated in seeing what is going on, respects when we tell him that certain things are grown up jobs, and loves dumping, stirring, tasting, rinsing, and pushing buttons.

Personality:  Jonah continues to be independent, but has also started to call for people who are not in the room to come join him.  "Daddy! Daddy in the dining room!" when Julian has made a run for water refills in the kitchen.  He has such a strong desire to learn and is so proud and delighted to share his new knowledge with the people he loves.  He can tell you "Jonah's street called Roosabewt. Lives in Bekley.  State called Ohio."  One of his favorite games is trying to pronounce new and challenging words.  He gets a huge grin as he tries to pronounce a few of our favorites to hear him try, such as Ophthalmologist (which he says just about right), sphygmomanometer ($&%*nometer), coccidioidomycosis (*#&^%*mycosis). If you ask him his full name, he rapidly rattles off "Jonah Nicholas Goodman!" in the best pronunciation one can with a smile as wide as his.  He can also tell you his grandparents' and parents' first names.

Jonah's love of trucks and trains is in full swing!  He has been into school busses and fire trucks for a few months, but now it has expanded to anything with a motor.  Sitting on the front porch, he narrates the passing traffic, identifying car, minivan, station wagon, pickup truck, dump truck, bus, school bus, taxicab (anything yellow, and sometimes non-yellow cabs), brown truck (UPS), and the greatest thrill of all: garbage truck.  He delights in watching the garbage truck so much, and Memorial day week trash pickup was delayed until a non-school day.  Did we spend 2 hours watching garbage, recycling, and yard waste picked up in Bexley? Yes. Yes, we did. And it was fantastic.  And you know you know your child well when on Friday of that week, we pulled up to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Michigan and the first thing we spotted was a street lined with filled garbage cans.  Indeed, just after we arrived, so did the trucks.  Twice in one week!  Such a lucky Jonah.  It has been a good month for trains too, as he got to see a real one from a park downtown, and then ride one at his end of the year picnic at school and again at the Detroit Zoo!

Jonah continues to love to climb, play, and swing at the playground. Unfortunately, he also loves to climb on anything not at the playground. He's very smart, and will announce proudly "doorknobs not a monkey bar". . . but when you're 2 the urge to dangle from them is just irresistible, and when we turn around he is undoubtably hanging upside down from a pair of doorknobs.  We ask "where are the monkey bars" and he always knows the right answer: "playgown."  So, we try to get him on the playground as much as possible since it's one of his favorite places to be.  Thank goodness for warm weather and accessible playgrounds!  Since he graduated to the big boy swing last month, he has become quite the proud little swinging boy  He had a record 42 minutes solid on the swing with Grandma and Grandpa last weekend.  We kept asking if he wanted to go do something else for a while and he sweetly smiled and answered "keep swingin!"

Milestones: In addition to the great verbal and cognitive developments we already mentioned, he's getting more accurate with throwing a ball in a basket and swinging a bat at a t-ball.  He can make the pedals on his tricycle go half way around with one foot, then the other, but hasn't made a full revolution yet.  He is also becoming more effective at washing his own hands. He just needs help getting soap out of the dispenser and someone to tell him how long to wash and rinse.

Events: Poppy and The Danger Brothers played at Cedar Point the day before it opened for alumni day.  Lindsay wasn't going to get on any rides :( but we knew Jonah would love it, so we snagged him from school just before lunch and nap, fed him in the car, let him nap, and then have the run of the place.  He got a kick out of eating McDonald's, period, let alone in Daddy's car!  The weather wasn't exactly perfect, but we played around the raindrops.  Jonah got to ride every ride in the park he was allowed to, and each one over and over, since the park was practically empty.  He would pick a ride, then announce what color car he wanted next, and ride again on another car.

Lindsay's Mom and sister put together a very nice mini-shower ("sprinkle"), but more on that later.  It was especially nice and convenient having Roy and Judy in town the night before since the baby gave us a little scare and they stayed home with sleeping Jonah while we went to the hospital.  Also, more later.  We got to see them the following weekend in Boca Raton, FL, and then the weekend after that in Detroit!  Julian's good friend from growing up, David, got married and we had our first weekend away from Jonah.  He stayed at Mimi and Poppy's and did just great!  He made himself right at home and had a blast playing with a train set and pushing a toy lawn mower tirelessly.  They even took him to see a replica of the Santa Maria downtown.

Last weekend, we made a trip to Detroit to visit and hang out.  Judy found Julian's toy dump truck and Jonah couldn't get enough! He filled it with all kinds of things and pushed it all around the house.  We got to visit 2 fantastic playgrounds and he climbed and swung to his heart's content. Before leaving on Sunday, we had bagels and lox then visited the Detroit Zoo.  For Jonah, the highlights seemed to the train and the penguins, which he will tell you were swimming, waddling and eating fish.  He also believes that they were eating bagels with their fish, but there is no evidence to support this.

Baby: Jonah loves talking about baby sister growing in Mommy's tummy and has been helping to get her room together.  We are fairly certain he understands what that means, but then again he told us yesterday, lifting his own shirt, "baby sista in Jonah tummy."  She's growing just like she should, moving, and hiccuping.  Lindsay has been feeling about as well as can be expected, but definitely feeling more tired and achy than with baby Jonah.  There was one night, right at 31 weeks, that contractions were regular and went on for a few hours, so we went to the hospital to get checked out.  A good shot in the arm and a few hours later that was the end of that.  The contractions are fairly strong, but nothing more that's regular, which is very good.  Lindsay is 34 weeks along now and we are making up the nursery, organizing supplies, prepping Jonah, and reminiscing about how small Jonah was 2 years ago. We have been showing him the little newborn clothes from when he was just a 5# bit of boy and tearing up.  We are so excited to meet her before long and have another little snuggle bug in the family.

This month, Lisa and Alana hosted a lovely little "sprinkle" in honor of Lindsay and baby girl.  It was very nice to get together with a few friends and family, open some delightfully pink things, and indulge in delicious food at Latitude 41 followed by amazing cupcakes from Kittie's Cakes.  It is starting to really feel, both physically and mentally, like there is going to be a baby!
