Jonah Nicholas, Month 3

July was a great month, with Julian getting home earlier and off on the weekends, and Lindsay enjoying more maternity leave.  We're starting to see Jonah's personality shine through and we couldn't love him more.  It's been so amazing this past month to look at him and see him really looking back at us and reacting to people and things around him.  We keep wondering how it is that he keeps getting cuter!  Enough of me going on about how cute he is. . . see for yourself! Lol :)

Growth: Since there isn't a 3 month checkup, we don't know Jonah's weight and length for sure.  We tried weighing him on adult scale that told us 13 lbs, and the kitchen scale says 11 lbs and 6 oz.  So who knows for sure, but either way, he's definitely bigger, and he now officially outweighs the cats.  The largest of the "newbown" size clothing just got too small, and he's squarely into the size "0-3 months."  He is lots of fun to dress up.  It's like playing dolls with a doll who plays back!

Sleep: He's getting a little more predictable about his sleep. He will usually take a couple of short naps with one long nap mid-day, then go to bed around 9 or 10 and not get up until 6. He's still doing the swaddler (though he has managed a couple of short naps without it) in his Rock and Play and sometimes in the crib.  The biggest change is that we moved him into the nursery for overnights.  We felt so far from him the first night, but it's been going great.

Eating: He will politely ask every few hours to eat (still a little more frequently in the evenings) and is pretty quick about getting his meal down -- he takes after Julian that way. The latest challenge is getting him to take a bottle in preparation for day care and to spend brief periods of time away from Lindsay. He will eventually get some milk down, but he puts up a bit of a fight. We keep on trying, though. He'll get it!

Personality: We are definitely getting to see more of who Jonah is.  He has really started to look at faces and react to voices and expressions.  A few of the residents where Lindsay works really got him smiling; he likes old people! :) There is nothing more fun than glancing over at Jonah on his blanket to find that he's staring right at you.  He seems to be craving to be upright and now enjoys his bouncy seat and swing, but still loves laying on a blanket, play mat, or especially on the changing table.  Likes and dislikes haven't otherwise changed much since last post.  We can add to his list of likes, left knuckles in mouth. Yum.
Continuing to enjoy the changing table and admiring his mobile

Still loves the bath!  Could be in tears, but immediately becomes happy when you plunk him in the tub!
Milestones: Jonah keeps getting stronger.  He can push down through his legs strong enough to support himself while we hold his torso.  His neck is strong enough to support his head while he sails around the house like Superman, but if you lay him down flat on a blanket he mostly makes noises and slobbers. Put a stuffed animal or small pillow under his chest and shoulders and he'll lift his head up pretty well, but he'd rather kick his legs and try to summersault over to of the support.  He's pretty good at baby sit-ups and is losing that "head lag" when you pull him up to sitting.  His trunk is strong enough to sit on your lap for extended periods.  The "oohs" and "aahs" have continued, and he has broadened his vocabulary to include "ah-goo," "woo," and "mem."  Also, the hands have become acquainted with each other, and with his mouth. He likes to bring his left fist to his mouth and use the right hand cupped around it to help out. If we lay a small blanket, animal, or doll on his tummy, he will hold it and fling his arms around a bit.

Events:   This past month also included Jonah's first trip out of town.  We drove up to Detroit with him to celebrate his great grandmother Phoebe's birthday.  He got to meet his great aunt and uncle, Nancy and Pete, and catch up with GG Phoebe and GG Merrill.  He slept the entire car ride up, and on the way down ate once along the way.  He loved getting snuggles from family and meeting Grandma Judy's friends.

Jonah and Lindsay started taking yoga class together.  It's really focused on both baby and mommy exercising, bonding, and socializing.  There has only been one class so far, so we'll see how it goes.

Jonah had his first playdate at our friends the Evanchans (and second, a week later) where he got to see his friends and go swimming. He got in the water up to his shoulders for about a half hour and seemed to enjoy floating around in Lindsay's arms. OK, so he was mostly sleeping, but sleeping happily.

Jonah, Lindsay, and his Mimi went to see cousins Ainsley and Jillian in a youth production of Sleeping Beauty, the 1-hour edition. We weren't sure how he would behave for his first live musical theater production, be surprisingly he sat on his Mommy's lap and watched the stage wide-eyed the entire show.  We're hoping this is just the start of his patronage to the arts.  This went so well we took him to see the girls in modeling in Nellie's Catwalk for Kids, benefitting central Ohio children with cancer and their families.  Those weren't the only live shows he attended.  Jonah has now officially been to hear his Poppy play a Danger Brothers show. They were doing a gig very close by and although it was a late night, he seemed like a happy guy all evening.

He met up with a few more friends, having lunch with Lindsay's friend Betsy one day, wandering new downtown parks with Laura, and hosting Dave and Melissa in from Pittsburgh one weekend. We were so happy to have them here and Jonah was so happy to have more opportunities for snuggles.

We can't wait to see what the next month has in store! This has been the most fun and exciting thing we have ever done!

Jonah Nicholas, Month 2

Our little Jonah has been doing lots of growing and developing.  He is such a happy little guy and we are likewise happy parents.

Growth: He is certainly much bigger. At his last checkup, which was 3 weeks ago, he was up to 9 pounds, 20.5 inches. That put him at 3rd %ile for weight and length, but at 10th for head circumference; maybe all the compliments are going to his head!  We think he's around 11 pounds now, but he's getting too big for the kitchen scale, so it's just a guess.

Sleep: Jonah is still sleeping swaddled in his "rock and play sleeper," which is basically a bassinet, with his ocean waves playing.  We have tried the crib a few times during daytime naps and have left an arm out of the swaddle from time to time and he has tolerated it, but has not slept quite as soundly.  His favorite place to sleep by day seems to be in someone's arms or in a moving stroller.  He isn't exactly sleeping through the night yet; he is in a pattern of eating around 9-10pm, then waking to eat at 3 am, 6 am, and 9 am roughly and going back to sleep, except after the 6am feeding where he is pretty wide awake and likes to read books and play and then only naps briefly before the 9 am meal.

Eating: This month has been a big improvement in efficiency.  He still eats about every 3-4 hours mid-day and 2-3 hours mornings and evenings before bed, but it doesn't take nearly as long.  We often hold him while we eat our meals and he seems to be developing an interest in what we are eating. He still has a while go to before he can get a taste, but we hope he is enjoying the aromas.

Personality: Jonah continues to be a happy little fella.  He wakes up hungry and whimpers, then after meals he's so much fun to play with!  We can tell he is really starting to take in the world around him.  He loves being on his changing table or floor mat and looking up at his mobile, dangling toys, noises, faces, mirrors, and OMG lights!! He seems inquisitive, staring at something wide-eyed and sometimes furrowing his brow.  After about 45 minutes to an hour of play, he lets us know he's tired with a few short, loud, "Aah"s, and we swaddle him, walk with him, and lay him down to nap.  Usually this is followed up with a nap, but sometimes he needs a little more cuddling and walking to do the trick.
- Likes: Snuggles (especially while you're walking), bath time, car rides, lights, mobiles, mirrors, hair dryer, vacuum, tummy time, walks, being worn in his Moby wrap, and listening to us read books.
- Dislikes: Non-moving car seat, gas, and trying to poop.

Likes changing table time and looking up at his mobile

Milestones: Jonah "volunteered" for the OSU PT students' pediatrics lab this summer and showed off some of his skills- which they said were right on track even for being early!  He holds his head up on his own mostly when upright, lifts if long enough to turn his head from one side to the other when face-down, and lifts it easily when propped up on something under his chest.  His best trick is that he smiles sometimes when he is especially calm and happy.  A few weeks ago he started bring his hands to his mouth and likes to suck on his first knuckle.  If you hold a toy that makes noise he will look right at it and track it with his eyes as you move if around.  His cooing is super cute and he makes little sighing noises and "ooo"s.

Events: This little guy is a real man about town.  We try to go on an outing of some sort every day. We accompanied Poppy to the zoo on his birthday and rode the train, visited Aunt Alana in her fabulous new apartment around the corner from us, attended the CSO patriotic popcorn pops concert, and had lunch dates with some good friends.  Julian enjoyed his first Father's Day.  Jonah cooked BBQ sauce for his Dad and Poppy, who spent the evening with us grilling out pizzas and relaxing.  The 4th of July weekend was super busy!  We went to watch Red, White, and Boom fireworks at a friend's party on the 20th floor of a downtown building and he snuggled in our arms and gawked at the show. He seemed to love it and didn't look away for even a moment.  Grandma and Grandpa Goodman came to town and they got to watch after him with Aunt Lauren twice, while we attended Lindsay's BHS reunion and went to a friend's wedding.  He was a champ and we are so thankful for their help.  Monday he met lots of family and got snuggles during the parade, brunch, and pool party and got to dip his toes in the water. The term "close supervision" probably just means one person holding him very carefully and paying constant attention, but he had another dozen pairs of eyes on him in addition.  He also got to attend his first friend's birthday party as Hannah turned 3.
